The 2019 Oscars award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 22. They could yield the finest Picture race which includes several large, crowd-pleasing strikes — and possibly the very first superhero film ever nominated in the category. The year’s frontrunners include big hits such as A Star Is Born and Black Panther in Addition to arthouse fare such as The Favourite and If Beale Street Could Talk. It might also be the year that Netflix earns its original Best Picture nomination, for the crucial favorite Roma.

The Academy Award winners — known to many people as the”Oscars,” for the nickname of the statuette awarded to winners — are awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 24 classes developed to recognize the year’s artistic and technical achievements. The academy award nominations is an invitation-only organization comprising members who have worked in the movie business, and its members vote on both the academy award nominations and the ultimate champions. In the recent years, the business has been criticized because of its overwhelming lack of racial and gender diversity; in reaction, it has been encouraging more diverse groups of movie professionals, including 928 people in 2018, to join its ranks.
